Senior Backend Engineer (6 month contract)

Two Circles is a global sports agency. We drive growth for sports properties by delivering deeper connections with fans, through the intelligent use of data and technology.   

We work with some of the world’s biggest sports organisations – including the NFL, Premier League, Formula 1, AFL, Wimbledon and UEFA – and have been named Sport Industry Agency of the Year on more than four occasions.  

We are almost 1000 people, based out of 14 offices, and we deliver work for sports and entertainment businesses of all shapes and sizes all over the world 

Data is at the center of our approach - helping clients to get a better understanding of their customers and deliver insights that influence top-level decision-making. From there, we develop digital products and integrate data and technology solutions that grow audiences and revenue across ticketing, participation, sponsorship and media. 

JOB DESCRIPTION   

As part of our ongoing growth, we are expanding our Software Engineering capability and are looking for an experienced Senior Engineer to join our London office. 

You will play a key role in shaping our rapidly evolving technology proposition and will be responsible for providing technical leadership, writing scalable and maintainable code, supporting technology consulting projects, and identifying and advising on appropriate solutions for our clients. 

 You will have a track record of designing and delivering high-quality digital solutions over the last 5+ years and have a keen interest in the application of technology in the sports industry.

Key Responsibilities

• Write clean, and reusable code following best practices whilst helping to define coding standards and team conventions. 
• Be an advocate for developer experience and have a keen interest in continually improving it. 
• Encouraging a blameless culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence. 
• Leading and influencing the technical design, architecture and development of digital projects. 
• Work closely with Engineering Managers, Engineering Leads and Product Managers to understand problems and define technical scope for global sports properties.  
• Setting up software development frameworks for release management, automation, code quality and source control.  
• Providing technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to other Two Circles engineers. 
• Keeping up to date on emerging technologies and trends in sports technology.   
• Presence in our London office for 2 days a week is encouraged for this role and occasional travel to other offices in London and EMEA will be required at times.   

Requirements

• A minimum of 5+ years experience in software engineering. 
• A high level of proficiency and understanding in Node.js, TypeScript with experience in React and Next.js desirable. 
• Strong understanding of database systems, including both document-oriented databases such as MongoDB and relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL. 
• Experience in a CI / CD environment where you have utilised tools such as Circle CI, GitHub actions or Azure DevOps etc. 
• An appreciation of DevOps and platform engineering culture. You don't just write code, but you also like to build and ship it, utilising cloud platforms and services, such as Azure, AWS or GCP. 
• Experience in agile development practices, continuous integration and test automation via various methods such as unit, integration, contract and E2E testing. 
• You have a high degree of experience in observing the performance and health of applications via tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Data Dog, Sentry, etc.  
• You have a strong desire and are an advocate for performant applications. 
• Proactive in solving problems simply and effectively, with an eye for pragmatic solutions. 
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences to explain your solutions and collaborate effectively with others. 
• Experience building services for high traffic systems is desirable.
