The Role:

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be involved in the full software life-cycle, working as part of a team with full-stack responsibilities. Our teams are typically multi-disciplinary, combining skills from Data Science/Engineering, DevSecOps, Product and UX. Software Engineers will typically have a detailed understanding of at least one object-oriented language, software design, industry best-practices as well as excellent communication skills and a constructive problem-solving mentality.

Senior Software Engineers excel at seeing beyond the immediate spec, developing forward-looking, cost-effective solutions that balance capability with the need to build in measured increments. Mentoring, encouraging curiosity and thinking about the bigger picture are a more important at the Senior level.

Duties and responsibilities:

Production of high-quality, well-tested, maintainable epics or entire applications, including
- Validation
- Design
- Planning
- Estimation
- Implementation
- Documentation
- Deployment
Re-architecture, re-organization and modernization of existing applications in a fault-tolerant, incremental manner
Identifying and cataloguing areas of technical debt in systems
Contribution to the broader engineering culture at Genius Sports
Constructive peer-review of features as well as good reviewee hygiene
Maintenance and development of CI/CD pipelines and cloud-infrastructure
Monitoring and maintenance of systems owned by the engineering team, including service outage response and retrospectives, live-support, bug-fixes and security improvements
Participation and improvement of agile ceremonies. Planning, grooming, retrospectives, stand-ups for sprints and planning increments
Mentoring, encouraging curiosity and thinking about the bigger picture

Required skills and experience:

Expert-level knowledge of PHP, including using the language to perform Object Oriented programming.
Good understanding of front end technologies (JavaScript, CSS, HTML, etc).
Flexibility to work on all areas of the service stack, front-end, back-end, infrastructure etc.
Experience scripting in bash or powershell
Mentoring and Leadership skills
Understanding of the principles of good software design. Familiarity with core concepts such as information hiding, abstraction, module design, cohesion and coupling
Detailed knowledge of testing methodology and designing high-quality testing suites resilient to changes in implementation
Detailed knowledge of Data Structures, Databases and Caching Technologies
Broader Software Architecture skills, detailed knowledge of architectural patterns
Experience working with highly-scalable, fault-tolerant architectures.
Experience of continuous integration, pipeline design, containerized workloads and infrastructure as code
Expert and designing and implementing effective Logging, Monitoring, Alerting and Escalation Policies
Data-driven, evidence-based mentality, practitioner of continuous experimentation and validation.
Excellent understanding of Agile, including a propensity to see beyond immediate specs and solve ambiguous problems

Desirable skills, attributes and experience:

Knowledge of modern PHP frameworks such as Symfony
Messaging and asynchronous communication technologies
Resiliency at scale
Feature Switching
Exposure to AWS technologies such as EC2, ECS, RDS, S3, SQS, CloudFront and ElasticCache
Operation of Kubernetes Clusters
Domain Driven Design
CQRS
Event Sourcing
Operation of Kubernetes Clusters
Extensive knowledge of Sport
Mathematical Aptitude, particularly statistics
Data Engineering skills
