An integral role within the World Surf League (WSL) Communications team, the Communications Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Communications team in developing tactics and executing plans to maximize the reach and awareness of the WSL to the public across ​​national and international competitions, campaigns, and brand initiatives. In this role, organization and attention to detail are key to ensuring efficiencies across the department, while innovative thinking is critical for driving new connections for the WSL. This role will report directly into the VP, Global Communications. 

Based on business priorities and team priorities, while in a hybrid working environment, the successful candidate should be based in Los Angeles, California. This is a hybrid role and will include 3 days in our HQ office in El Segundo, Tuesday through Thursday.

Responsibilities include (but not limited to): 

PR Planning and Execution

  • Support execution of PR/communications plans.
  • Quality control on Communications materials, inclusive of press releases, ensuring error-free execution. 
  • Research new press contacts and social opinion leaders, and develop new ideas for amplification of assigned projects.  
  • Draft press releases, press pitches, messaging points, and briefing materials for all assigned projects.
  • Assist with press pitching and outreach. Curate assets for media kits, including compelling narratives/messaging and visuals. 
  • Draft WSL social and editorial posts (copy and assets) as relevant to Communications projects, announcements, and buzz-worthy moments off-channel. 
  • Research and organize database of social opinion leaders within surfing, sport, entertainment, and lifestyle sectors. 
  • Ideate innovative PR moments and activations to enhance the WSL’s key narratives and reach awareness goals. 

Regional Communications 

  • Support Regional teams’ initiatives and goals through integration of communications planning and execution. 
  • Collaborate with Regional team members to elevate regional projects, initiatives, and narratives across regional competition, corporate, and brand initiatives. Also ensure regional coverage and success across overall global competition, competition, and brand initiatives. 
  • Organize Weekly Communications call agendas and review Regional Communications plans to ensure alignment to HQ’s standard deliverables, best practices, and style guides. 
  • Review Comms materials to ensure accurate representation of the WSL and messaging across all Regional Communications outputs.

Competition Press Management 

  • Support Communications directives at WSL competitions.
  • Remote and in-person press support during competitions, including press accreditation, media facilities, and press requests. 
  • Draft materials for press conferences, including the run of show, script, invitations, outreach, and follow-ups. 
  • Book Comms-related travel as necessary (athletes, ambassadors, press, etc). 
  • Coordinate press travel logistics for special hosting at events. Create itineraries for press hosting. 

Ongoing Responsibilities 

  • Consistently contribute to and maintain the WSL’s comprehensive Communications Toolkit, including the Communications calendar, media database, Comms style guides and messaging, risk register, business metrics, and executive bios. 
  • Clip press articles, TV segments, and social posts for reporting purposes. Create presentations, newsletters, excel reports, and recap decks.
  • Review all external press inquiries. Manage response register to ensure all inquiries are answered or elevated internally within 24 hours.  
  • Organize third-party footage and photo requests, and log usage rights determined by Communications and the Licensing team. 
  • Submit department invoices and expense reports. Track within all relevant documents. 
  • Stay up to date on digital marketing, communications, and social media trends, and suggest new tactics to achieve more awareness of the WSL competitions and brand initiatives. 
  • Support the Communications team as necessary. 

Qualifications: 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • 2+ years experience in Communications/PR or related fields. 
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in English, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or related field. 
  • Must be fluent in English, additional language skills preferred. 
  • Immersed and interested in the market and in touch with digital and culture trends. 
  • Strong organizational skills, and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.
  • Hunger for learning; openness and ability to wear many hats when necessary. 
  • Experience with Google Suite (or comparable across Powerpoint, Excel, etc).
  • Experience with video editing and content production. 
  • Working knowledge of Creative Software preferred (Adobe Creative Suite).
  • International travel may be required. 
  • A flexible schedule is preferred, as nights, weekends, and holidays may likely be required.

Salary Range: $67,000.00- $70,000.00 based on relevant experience.
