About Us

The Athletic is a digital sports media company that brings true sports fans closer to the athletes, teams and leagues that captivate their attention. We serve a multi-faceted audience that craves a richer connection and understanding with immersive storytelling and a like-minded community of fans. Founded in 2016 and with major operational hubs in San Francisco, Los Angeles, London and Melbourne, we empower a truly global team of more than 600 creators and cover more than 250 professional sports and collegiate teams across the United States, Canada and the UK. Our newsroom has produced thousands of in-depth reports along with more than 120 podcasts and other forms of premium content. Put simply, The Athletic is at the center of a sports fan’s universe.

About the Role

We are looking for a switched-on deputy news editor with an in-depth knowledge of UK sport, in particular football, to join our expanding news operation.

Working as part of the UK news team and reporting to the news editor, you will be across the biggest and most important news stories each day and find a unique angle on it, telling stories in the way only The Athletic can.

Other responsibilities will include working with our team of journalists and content planning for upcoming events, including live coverage.

A key part of the role is helping to manage a small team so communication is key. There will be occasions where you will be expected to run the news desk during busy times.

Our ideal candidate will have experience of working in a busy newsroom, a journalistic qualification and have SEO expertise. A deep understanding of sport and sports news is essential.

This role will be hybrid for candidates based in the UK.

Responsibilities
  • Commissioning and editing news stories.
  • Rewriting and reformatting news stories to fit in with The Athletic’s style.
  • Working with the editor to ensure the most important stories are covered every day.
  • Liaising with reporters on breaking news stories and helping to develop exclusives.
  • Managing news SEO strategy alongside senior editors.
  • Contribute proactively to daily editorial meetings with new ideas.
  • Broad knowledge of a wide variety of men’s and women’s sport.
  • Understanding of social media and data.
  • Leading the news desk in news editor’s absence.

  • Requirements
  • Relevant qualification with 2+ years of relevant journalistic experience.
  • Ability to operate quickly and communicate information effectively.
  • Experience of working with SEO.
  • Excellent writing skills and an ability to convey information precisely.
  • In-depth knowledge of sport and experience of working with breaking news.
  • Proficiency developing content plans around major events.
  • High-level communication skills and an ability to liaise with senior management.
  • Collaborate with other global offices and work flexibly across different time zones.
  • The role will primarily be based in the London office.

  • The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
