Outside is seeking an Editorial Director to lead and help reimagine our flagship publication while also acting as a strong assigning digital editor for Outside Online. Reporting to Outside’s Senior Brand Director, this hybrid role will help shape the future of outdoor media, balancing oversight of our quarterly print issues with impactful contributions to our dynamic digital presence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive content strategy for print 
    • Establish a fresh vision for Outside magazine in 2025, including the issue architecture, story mix, and visuals 
    • Collaborate with your digital counterpart, Outside Online’s Managing Editor, to ensure the print vision complements the brand’s web strategy 
  • Oversee all aspects of production for four annual print issues
    • Spearhead lineup planning and issue themes
    • Collaborate with the creative team on design and layouts
    • Generate buzz-worthy cover subjects and visual approaches
    • Oversee budgets for manuscripts, art, and photography
    • Manage a print team of editors, writers, and designers
  • Assign, edit, and top edit both features and short-form stories for print and online
  • Collaborate with the business side on revenue and growth strategies for print
  • Represent Outside magazine at industry events and in media 
  • Work to sell Outside and Outside Online articles as film projects with an established partner
  • Oversee entry processes for many award programs and anthology projects, including the National Magazine Awards and the Best of series of books.

The ideal candidate is a change agent who has a clear vision for reimagining Outside's print content strategy for a new era—and brings a strong digital background to the table. They are equally comfortable crafting slow-cooked long-form feature articles or executing quick-turn, relevant online stories. They are an influential manager who excels at communication and is comfortable leading a team through change. Most importantly, the candidate will be passionate about inspiring our audience to lead active, adventurous lives and spend more time outdoors.

This role is remote, with opportunities for travel as needed. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Within 1 month, you will: 

  • Immerse yourself in Outside's brand, audience, and current content strategy
  • Meet with all team members and key stakeholders
  • Review upcoming print issue plans and make sure we’re on track to hit future deadlines
  • Assess current workflows and team structure
  • Identify opportunities for digital stories and traffic growth
  • Begin planning your first print issue as Editorial Director
  • Learn platforms that we use, including Asana, TalentDesk, and WordPress

Within 6 months, you will: 

  • Successfully publish your first print issue as Editorial Director
  • Have mapped out cover sells and content for future print issues
  • Have multiple online stories live on the site
  • Establish collaborative processes between print and digital
  • Identify and begin cultivating new writer and contributor relationships
  • Work with business team to align content strategy with revenue goals

Within 12 months, you will: 

  • Oversee the successful publication of 4 print issues, each showing innovation in content and design in a refreshed brand
  • Demonstrate significant growth in digital reach and engagement through your online assignments
  • Ideate on creative packages and stories that bring renewed energy to the print publication
  • Build strategic partnerships with key players in the outdoor industry
  • Show measurable improvements in team satisfaction and productivity
  • Present a forward-looking 2-year vision for Outside magazine’s editorial direction

What YOU bring to Outside:  (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 7+ years of experience in editorial leadership roles, with a track record of success in both print and digital media
  • Deep passion for and knowledge of outdoor recreation, adventure sports, and environmental issues
  • Proven ability to lead teams and manage complex projects across multiple platforms
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with an eye for compelling storytelling
  • Digital savvy, with a keen understanding of SEO, social media, and content distribution strategies
  • Excellent management, communication, and interpersonal skills

 

Entirely remote jobs that could be performed in Colorado: Employees can expect to be paid a salary of  between $120,000 to $150,000.  Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission . Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, Flexible Time Away,  sick leave, and more.  This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors
