Job Description

About This Role

Strava is the app for active people. With over 150 million athletes in more than 185 countries, Strava is where connection, motivation, and personal bests thrive. No matter your activity, gear, or goals, we help you find your crew, crush your milestones, and keep moving forward. Start your journey with Strava today.

Our mission is simple: to motivate people to live their best active lives. We believe in the power of movement to connect and drive people forward.

At Strava, we empower teams to innovate by managing our infrastructure and cloud spend with care and accountability. As an Engineering Manager, you'll drive platform reliability and modernization initiatives, using data-driven strategies to enhance developer productivity and ensure our platform scales seamlessly with Strava's growth.

This role is on the Strava Foundation Team, which exists to provide tools, systems, and support to make Strava reliable, scalable, and performant for our athletes. As an Engineering Manager, you'll lead our platform and productivity engineering efforts, managing a team of engineers who build the developer tools, API services, networking, security, and foundational systems that power Strava's platform.

Your team's work directly enables all of Strava's product teams to deliver features faster and more reliably to millions of athletes worldwide. You'll partner closely with other Foundation Team leaders, product teams, and engineering leadership to ensure our platform infrastructure scales with Strava's growth.

We follow a flexible hybrid model that generally translates to half your time on-site in our San Francisco office — three days per week.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and grow a team of platform and infrastructure engineers, providing mentorship, career development, and technical guidance.
  • Drive the strategic roadmap for API services, developer tooling, networking infrastructure, and general platform systems.
  • Partner with engineering teams across Strava to understand their platform needs and translate them into actionable technical initiatives.
  • Ensure your team's services maintain high availability, performance, and developer experience standards that support Strava's scale.
  • Foster a culture of ownership where your team members participate in on-call rotations and take pride in the systems they build.
  • Balance hands-on technical involvement with people management, staying close enough to the technology to make informed architectural decisions.
  • Drive technical excellence while maintaining focus on business impact and enabling other teams to move faster.

What You'll Bring to the Team:

  • 2+ years of experience managing infrastructure, platform, or API engineering teams, with a proven track record of growing engineers and delivering complex technical projects.
  • Strong technical background in infrastructure engineering, platform services, or site reliability engineering, with the ability to guide technical decisions and architectural discussions.
  • Experience leading teams that build and operate services at significant scale, understanding the challenges of reliability, performance, and developer experience.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence and align stakeholders across multiple engineering teams.

Some of our Technical Expectations:

We're not looking for 100% coverage; if you match any of these qualifications, we'd love to hear from you:

  • Experience managing teams working with modern infrastructure technologies like AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD systems.
  • Background leading platform services, developer tooling, networking infrastructure, or similar foundational engineering domains.
  • Understanding of observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and distributed systems monitoring at scale.
  • Experience with containerization, service mesh technologies, and modern deployment practices.
  • Familiarity with database technologies, caching systems, and distributed system design principles.

Compensation Overview:

At Strava, we know our employees are the most important ingredient to our success, and our compensation and total rewards programs reflect that. We take a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on the department and your location. Salary ranges are categorized into one of three tiers based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. We will determine the candidate’s starting pay based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. We may modify these ranges in the future. For more information, please contact your talent partner.

Compensation: $228,000 - $242,000. This range reflects base compensation only and does not include equity or benefits. Your recruiter can share more details about the full compensation package, including the range specific to your location, during the hiring process.
