Job Description

At On, retail isn’t just a channel—it’s an experience. As we scale our global footprint, we’re laying the foundation for a future-ready Point of Sale (POS) ecosystem. We’re looking for a Senior Lead - Engineering Manager to help scale On’s Retail Experience Platform. In this role, you’ll be based in our London office, working closely with the product team, retail operations, and key stakeholders to drive the integration of our new POS system, retail replenishment systems, and other mission-critical store integrations. All with the end goal of maximizing the operational efficiency of our stores and driving the best experience for our retail commercial goals. Your entrepreneurial and result-driven mindset, combined with strong hands-on technical oversight and execution skills, will make you a key member of the core team on which On’s physical retail future is built.

Your Mission

:

  • Drive Product Execution: You'll oversee the technical strategy and execution of multiple foundational projects within the retail space—specifically POS and replenishment integrations—ensuring they align with our product vision and significantly impact our retail commercial enablement. This involves taking ownership of delivery (timeline and quality), managing risk, anticipating blockers, and guiding your team through complex, real-world retail integrations.
  • Team Leadership & Development: You'll build, lead, mentor, and empower a cross-functional team of engineers, fostering an inclusive culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement. You'll hold the team accountable to high standards, groom high performers through development feedback, make high-quality hiring decisions, and boost overall productivity.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: You'll partner closely with product, retail operations, sibling engineering teams, and technology vendors daily to ensure seamless feature delivery. You will translate complex technical topics into a clear narrative for stakeholders and ensure your team's mission aligns with On’s strategic retail direction.
  • Technical Guidance & Standards: You'll collaborate with the leadership team to establish and advocate for best practices in system design, operational excellence, and observability (SLOs, incident management). You will ensure your team's technical decisions and architectural designs are consistently in line with On Tech's architectural North Star, emphasizing secure, scalable, and resilient cloud-native integrations.

Your Story:

  • You hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • You bring a minimum of 8 years of related experience in software development, demonstrating a broad technical expertise in backend systems, with proven experience as an Engineering Manager building and scaling teams from the ground up.
  • You have a strong track record of driving significant technical initiatives and possess deep business acumen, particularly in integrating APIs across commerce, POS, ERP, OMS, or CRM domains.
  • You possess strong problem-solving skills to tackle complex technical and product challenges, are a genuine team player, and communicate exceptionally well in English.
  • You are confident working with a modern tech stack and event-driven architectures, including proficiency in TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL, message brokers (e.g., Kafka), and cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • You have hands-on experience in defining sourcing strategies to attract top-tier engineering talent and are committed to continuously raising the bar within your team through effective mentorship and professional development.
  • Experience evaluating, integrating, and working closely with external technology vendors is highly desirable.

Attributes of a successful candidate:

  • Pragmatic Problem Solver: You excel at tackling complex challenges with practical, efficient solutions, always prioritising simplicity and avoiding unnecessary system complexity.
  • Collaborative Influencer: A true leader rather than a manager, you're adept at guiding team decisions and fostering consensus through professional and constructive influence.
  • Committed to Growth and Feedback: You're comfortable providing candid feedback to both peers and leadership, and equally eager to integrate feedback from others to continuously elevate your own expertise.
