Position Reports To: Sr. Segment Producer, News

Position Summary:       

MLB Network seeks a Freelance Broadcast Associate (BA), News. This entry level position provides support to the production process, as assigned. The BA must have a strong passion for and knowledge of baseball and hockey and an exceptional work ethic. The News/Assignment Desk monitors multiple sources for breaking news and developing stories to ensure that all MLB/NHL Network shows are up to date with the most newsworthy content. The News/Assignment Desk is heavily involved in scheduling and organizing the day-to-day programming on MLB/NHL Networks. Additionally, the News/Assignment Desk collaborates with camera operators to identify and catalog notable footage from all 30 Major League ballparks using our MLB Network Ballpark Cams.

Responsibilities: Specific responsibilities include:

  • Identify and disseminate pertinent MLB/NHL news items.
  • Acquire content through a variety of different methods for use on MLB/NHL Network platforms.
  • Actively participate in production meetings by pitching relevant, timely, feasible story ideas.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with various media contacts to help gather and produce content for MLB/NHL Network platforms.
  • Manage time effectively to meet long-term and short-term deadlines, sometimes under high-stress, breaking news conditions.
  • Coordinate between the Production and Operations departments to organize a comprehensive studio schedule on a daily basis.
  • Other such duties as required.

It is expected that the Broadcast Associate, News will maintain and increase knowledge of the Production discipline as well as the overall business on an ongoing basis. 

Skills & Experience: The ideal candidate must have most if not all the following skills and experiences:

  • 0 to 3 years’ relevant experience is required.
  • Must demonstrate a passion for and deep knowledge of Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League.
  • Proficiency with business-related software, such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Sheets, etc.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be extremely organized, demonstrate initiative and an ability to complete multiple assignments in a timely manner.
  • Individual must work well in a dynamic environment and be able to recommend and implement process improvements, work independently, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Demonstrate the tact, diplomacy, decisiveness, and superior people skills required in a pressurized live television environment.
  • Possess auditory acuity to effectively listen to instructions via Riedel system, phones, etc.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Possess the manual dexterity to effectively operate keyboard/mouse on computers, edit equipment, etc.
  • Ability to lift, up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to navigate distances of various lengths within the work environment.

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Broadcast Journalism or a related major is highly preferred.

Work Classification: In-Office. These positions require employees to perform their work from the office during the employee’s assigned schedule unless they are traveling for business.
