Music Designer

The Music Designer will be working full time as a member of our in-house music team to deliver high quality music and implementation for exciting new IP’s and world-renowned franchises from across PlayStation Studios. Reporting into the Head Of Music (EU), the primary function of this role is to provide knowledge and skill in music editing, production, and implementation to the team.

This is an opportunity to work on high profile titles within a friendly and dedicated award-winning music team.

Responsibilities

 

  • Contribute to game music design under minimal supervision and complete complex tasks.
  • Expected to make a successful contribution to the fulfillment of projects & organizational objectives.
  • Positively influences the activities of other team members.

Direction:

  • Contributes to and provides feedback on the overall music design vision.
  • Provides direction to small groups of music design staff or can direct a portion of a title's music implementation.
  • Working with manager, can help build the music production and implementation schedule.
  • Helps set priorities for team or sub-team.

 

Design:

  • Can lead a workgroup that is tasked with creating specifications for a project's music system, ensuring that the system is aligned with the project goals and within the guidelines of the production schedule.
  • Consistently supports how the implementation requirements are developed throughout the duration of the project.
  • Consistently contributes editorial work that is in line with the overall project music design vision.

Implementation:

  • Competent in multiple implementation domains.
  • Can premix content in authoring environment to appropriate levels.
  • Brings novel implementation solutions to the team and can explain them clearly.
  • Solid competence in music authoring tools and environments.
  • Understands core concepts of refining work for performance optimization.
  • Documents their work for systems built in music authoring tool.

Asset Management:

  • Recommends technical requirements for assets and pipeline needs.
  • Can produce asset lists and estimates from project design.
  • Reviews deliverables and determines technical acceptance to match project needs. (e.g. creative fulfillment, naming conventions, file formats)

Recording/Production:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of microphone theory, recording techniques, and industry standard gear.
  • Can mentor junior team members in session planning and execution.
  • Ensures consistency across all delivered assets including editing and naming.

Communication:

  • Drives communication for major area of music design ownership for the product; updates supervisor with status and risks regularly.
  • Drives review process for their area of ownership; books reviews and tracks progress.
  • Owns communication for area of ownership with music team and development partners.
  • Demonstrates entry level proficiency in PowerPoint or Keynote.

Process & Planning:

  • Works with senior music design staff to identify assets required for project.
  • Displays consistent participation in planning exercises within the music team.
  • Fields requests for project assets from other teams such as Marketing.
  • Oversees small backlog of issues; monitors and assists junior team members.
  • Participates in bug triage.

Innovation:

  • Helps drive consistent communication internally and with development partners about ways to elevate quality for their area of ownership.
  • Participates in competitive analysis as required.
  • Helps identify opportunities to grow & develop emerging music production techniques and creative trends.

Requirements

 

  • A comprehensive background in music production techniques
  • Highly skilled with professional audio tools such as (but not limited to) ProTools and Nuendo 
  • Knowledge of signal processing tools such as compressors, limiters, equalizers, etc. 
  • Skills with implementing game music or audio using tools such as Sony’s Scream, Wwise, Fmod, Maya, Unreal, Unity, etc. 
  • Self-disciplined, able to meet deadlines and to report progress to producers 
  • A keen ear for high quality music and audio
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines while maintaining professional respect and courtesy to developers and team members 
  • Relevant accredited education in the field of music \ audio \ game design
