Possibility Space is seeking a Principal Concept Artist (Environments) to help us shape the visual direction for our exciting original IP. This seasoned artist will work closely with the Art Director and other creative leads to help establish the visual direction and quality bar for the game. Do you love worldbuilding? Can you translate your ideas into exciting AAA-caliber concept images? Are you a storyteller specializing in environment painting? Do you like to create rich imaginary worlds? Reporting to the Art Director, this role will collaborate with disciplines across the entire project through all stages of development. We are looking for an artist with prior experience creating original IPs or working on AAA projects who can help us shape the visual direction of a game. This artist will be asked to help craft the overall visual aesthetic of the project and set the pace and quality for the design of environments in our world.

Core Responsibilities & Objectives

  • Create detailed original concepts of primarily environments and props, but also characters and creatures at a high AAA quality level.
  • Paint over both 3D block-outs and other 2D concepts to improve and refine designs.
  • Produce inspirational, promotional, and marketing art.
  • Help craft style guides and establish the visual language for the project.
  • Gather and organize visual references.
  • Actively participate in weekly art reviews and discuss your own process for any work in progress designs.

Core Traits (Skills, Knowledge, Experience)

  • Excellent understanding of color theory, design, lighting, composition, and materials.
  • Strong painting and rendering skills with digital painting software.
  • Ability to create environment-based images that demonstrate solid perspective, with a high attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate production concepts clearly with callouts to modelers and outsourcing teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a willingness to give and receive both written and verbal feedback in a cross-disciplinary environment.
  • Comfortable sharing in-progress work.

Requirements

  • 8-10 years of experience in Game Development and/or Concept Art
  • Strong drawing, painting, and iteration skills.
  • Ability to work from rough thumbnails to polished quality concepts.
  • Experience collaborating with multiple disciplines, including Game Designers, Narrative Designers, Level Designers,3D Artists and Animators.
  • An online portfolio, that not only showcases final quality imagery but also your artistic process (Including research, thumbnails, color studies and call outs for 3D modelers). No PDFs please.

Bonus Traits

  • Experience working on a AAA video game
  • Experience working in a 3D package (eg. Blender)

Physical Requirements 

  • Close vision to monitors and screens, consistently working on computer equipment such as keyboards and monitors, long periods of sitting.
