Job Description

At Viaplay Group, we entertain millions of people every day through our streaming services, radio networks, and TV channels. We believe in the power of content not just as a way of telling stories and touching lives, but also expanding worlds.

We’re looking for the best people to join us on our journey. Right now, we’re searching for a Principal Engineer in our Barcelona office – are you ready to hit play on an exciting career change?

The Role

As a Principal Engineer at Viaplay, you will be contributing hands-on by engineering scalable and resilient back-end systems in Node.js and Rust running in AWS, as well as driving the overall technical vision and direction of our platform. In your role, you will ensure we develop the platform to meet the challenges of a continuously evolving product, developing strategies to battle complexity and ensuring efficiency. With your passion for technical leadership and willingness to act as role model for others, you will be an advocate for the developer community and a mentor to engineers within your domain.

You will join an autonomous metrics driven team of experts to deliver engineering solutions aligned with long-term technical and product visions. We build our entire product in-house, with apps in native languages and a microservices backend on AWS, transitioning toward an event-driven, serverless architecture. We strongly believe that continuously learning, adopting new tools such as AI where they add value, and challenging the status quo are crucial to succeeding in the dynamic environment of an entertainment company.

What we’re looking for

We are looking for a passionate and experienced developer with a genuine interest in software engineering and leadership. We believe that you are currently working in a role as Principal Engineer, Technical Lead, Technical Director or Technical Architect, and have experience of working with a variety of challenges requiring solving complex technical problems.

You thrive in a high energy, autonomous team-driven environment where you are asked to have the strategic perspective to develop our business.

Successful candidates also meet the following requirements:

  • Extensive professional experience developing customer-focused, web-based services using JavaScript, and TypeScript. And other modern programming languages like Rust or Python

  • Proven ability to design highly scalable, resilient cloud services on AWS

  • Strong experience setting technical direction, influencing peers, and driving meaningful change across teams

  • Experience working with stateless, highly transactional end-user products

  • Solid experience contributing in agile, autonomous, and delivery-focused teams

  • Proven experience introducing and scaling AI-assisted engineering practices, such as harness engineering, spec-driven workflows, or similar approaches

  • Comfortable working in hybrid, distributed, and highly collaborative environments

  • Experience establishing knowledge-sharing patterns and practices in a product organization, including leading cross-team and organization-level initiatives

  • Experience defining integration strategies with third-party platforms and commercial off-the-shelf products

  • Experience building, modernizing, or migrating complex systems at scale

It’s a bonus if you have:

  • Experience from the media or streaming industry.

What we offer you

  • Our HQ is in Stockholm, with our Tech hub based in Barcelona. You will become part of an amazing company with great people, content, and culture.

  • An attractive offer with beneficial insurance, health care plan, meal vouchers, 30 days of paid vacation, flexible working hours, a hybrid model, flexible remuneration, and more!

  • A safe space to grow and up-skill. Our learning culture puts you in the driver’s seat of your own development.

  • An innovative environment with Hack Days once a year. This week-long initiative allows you to think outside the box and deliver creative, technical solutions that (more often than not) go on to be implemented, either in our product or our ways of working.

  • Entertainment is what we love, and entertainment is what we do. So, unlimited access to Viaplay seems only fair for you to get to know the product – including series & viewing events, new release movie rentals, linear channels and more.
