About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Character Artist – Reviewer to join our team on a freelance basis. In this role, you will be responsible for reviewing and approving 3D character assets produced for our projects, ensuring they meet our artistic vision, technical requirements, and studio quality standards.

This position blends high-level character art expertise with a strong ability to evaluate work, provide actionable feedback, and maintain consistency across pipelines. While primarily a review role, you may also contribute hands-on character work where needed to support project goals or guide artistic direction.

This is a remote position, open to candidates located within the United Kingdom.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Review 3D character assets (sculpts, models, textures, materials, topology, and deformation readiness) for visual fidelity, anatomical accuracy, and technical quality.
• Deliver clear, constructive written, oral, and visual feedback, ensuring alignment with project style guides, fidelity targets, and technical specifications.
• Integrate approved assets into game engines (such as Unreal), validating naming conventions, scale, materials, and optimization.
• Partner closely with internal leads, technical artists, and production teams to ensure pipeline cohesion and quality consistency.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and help resolve visual, deformation, or technical issues related to character assets.
• Create and maintain documentation for character art workflows, review guidelines, and best practices.
• Participate in internal review meetings and maintain strong communication with global partners.
• Provide hands-on support when required, including sculpting, modeling, texturing, and polish passes using Maya/Max, ZBrush, Substance tools, and Photoshop.
• Enter review notes and approvals into project tracking systems such as JIRA or ShotGrid.

Minimum Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional experience as a Character Artist or Senior Character Artist in game development.
• At least one shipped title (console, PC, or equivalent).
• Expert understanding of human and creature anatomy, silhouette, topology, UVs, PBR texturing, and character material creation.
• Proficiency in industry-standard software: Maya or 3ds Max, ZBrush, Substance Painter/Designer, Photoshop.
• Strong understanding of current-gen pipelines, character asset requirements, and optimization for real-time environments.
• Proven ability to evaluate, critique, and guide character art with clear and actionable feedback.
• Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail.
• Highly organized, self-driven, and comfortable working with distributed teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in a reviewer, lead, or mentorship role for character art teams.
• Proficiency with Unreal Engine or similar real-time engines.
• Familiarity with version control tools such as Perforce or Git.
• Understanding of rigging principles, deformation requirements, and LOD workflows.
• Experience contributing to pipeline documentation or art guidelines.
