About the Role
The Athletic seeks a Senior Editor, Tennis to lead its global coverage of tennis. This is a role providing oversight of professional tennis coverage with desk leadership. The senior editor will be heavily involved in long-term organization and planning, with an emphasis on editorial planning and reporter development. The candidate will also be involved in day-to-day coverage including editing, writing and publishing.
This role requires a combination of office-based and remote working, with a minimum 3 days per week in our London office.
ResponsibilitiesManage reporters (one in US, one in UK) with an emphasis on long-term growth and development in the delivery of news, live, analysis, features and some audio/video.Assist with big-picture, conceptual vision of the desk, with an emphasis on long-term direction of coverage, developing a type of content that is in keeping with The Athletic’s DNA.Make sure writers are prioritising the right stories while also standing out in a busy market.Understand how to use data in tennis journalism.Attend Wimbledon and the US Open and run coverage from there.Organize and structure consistent methods of feedback.Maintain an understanding and proficiency of subscription and engagement metrics and SEO.Be able to be in charge of output while taking guidance from UK Editor-in-chief.Link up well with our commercial and social teams.Requirements8+ years of experience in digital sports journalism.Advanced ability to generate creative ideas and sustain long-term growth toward vision.Works well with writers and editors; strong sense of how to take a single idea and develop it into a broader package.Advanced understanding of the following editing tasks: news breaking, copy editing, story structure, recognizing problematic sentences, style guidelines, SEO.Ability to add context to stories, edit in the writer’s voice, ensure fairness, provide story structure.Ability to talk to US audience, UK audience, international audience.High-end knowledge of professional tennis.Ability to deliver honest and timely feedback.This role requires a combination of office-based and remote working, with a minimum 3 days per week in our London office.The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
