LA28 is the independent, non-profit, privately funded organizing committee for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Senior Managing Counsel, Ceremonies & Content:

The Senior Managing Counsel, Ceremonies and Content Business & Legal Affairs, will provide day-to-day business and legal affairs support for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Working alongside LA28’s chosen production company, the rest of the legal team, and others within LA28 and its related production company(ies), this position will be responsible for driving production legal matters and business affairs discussions, including negotiating and finalizing all levels of production-related agreements and performer deals. In addition, this role will design and implement sophisticated legal forms and key practices, including without limitation, building processes to ensure efficiency and satisfaction of all required deliverables. The Senior Managing Counsel will liaise and coordinate with LA28’s attorneys, business executives and external stakeholders (e.g., IOC, IPC, broadcasters, sponsors, venues, government entities, outside counsel, etc.). Opportunities to bolster other LA28 non-competition events, special content and marketing teams (e.g., Torch Relay, fan experiences, etc.) may also arise.

This position will report to the Associate General Counsel, Head of Business and Legal Affairs for Ceremonies and Content. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Steady stream of self-directed analytical work, drafting, meetings, and complex decision-making. 
  • Provide time-sensitive business and legal advice to the creative and production teams. 
  • Negotiate terms, paper and review all varieties of contracts, including without limitation, above- and below-the-line talent agreements, equipment rentals, wardrobe and props paperwork, production services agreements, leases, venue agreements, etc. 
  • Opine on and finalize key clearance documents, IP licenses, and music rights. 
  • Establish and enforce standard legal operating procedures with outside production company, including without limitation, clearance training, use of standardized legal agreements and tracking of intellectual property. 
  • Prepare confidentiality agreements, waivers, consents, legal memoranda and/or other correspondence and strategic projects, as required. 
  • Assist with the management of communications and relationships with LA28’s business and strategic partners. 
  • Review, understand and ensure alignment with all relevant corporate/stakeholder documents (including Host City Contract and Operational Requirements, Olympic Charter, Code of Ethics, etc.). 
  • Supervise, monitor and assist in the career development of any junior attorneys and/or paralegals. 
  • Work with outside counsel on matters requiring specialty support. 
  • Ensure compliance with applicable international, federal, state and local laws and regulations. 
  • Keep current on industry-wide legal trends and developments. 
  • Support and collaborate with all members of the legal department on identified business transactions and legal matters. 

Background & Requirements:

  • Minimum 7+ years’ legal experience, with at least 4 years’ transactional entertainment contract matters required. 
  • Concrete understanding of entertainment practices, intellectual property, business contracting, negotiations, and transactional principles. 
  • Extensive experience in one or more of the following focus areas is required: musician/artist performer agreements, guild rules and agreements, clearance and/or music licensing, business and legal affairs for live media/sports events, and/or theatrical/television production. 
  • Prior law firm and/or in-house entertainment experience.

  • Proactive self-starter with outstanding project and time management skills and the capacity to manage heavy workloads and shifting priorities to meet tight deadlines. 

Education:

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited university. 
  • Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA accredited law school. 
  • License to practice law, be in good standing with the California State Bar and have the ability to practice law in California

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Local candidates preferred. 
  • Ability to work on-site, in an open office environment, based in Los Angeles, CA.  
  • The majority of work will be conducted in an office setting, requiring extended periods of time using computers, phones, and other office equipment.  
  • Hours of work may vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak event periods. 

The annual base salary range for this position is $180,000-$200,000. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28’s operational business needs and applicable law.
