About This Role

iRhythm is currently seeking a Senior Optoelectronics Design Engineer to join our Product Development team. Engineers at iRhythm work passionately to deliver innovative solutions that improve the quality of healthcare and the patient experience. In this role you will contribute directly to near and long-term commercialization efforts for our next-generation wearable bio-sensors, collaborating alongside a small team of multi-disciplinary engineers experienced in bringing medical devices to market.

You will be the lead optoelectronic design engineer releasing wearable hardware in a regulated medical device industry. Your task will be to integrate photoplethysmography (PPG) or other optical solutions into our next generation medical sensors. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to build and shape iRhythm’s optical expertise.

This is a hybrid position, and 2-3 days/week at our San Francisco, California office + lab will be required. Will need to be flexible to work 100% onsite as needed.

Day to day responsibilities:

  • Be the lead subject matter expert for optics within the company.
  • Selecting and integrating appropriate optical components (LEDs, photodiodes, etc.).
  • Use optical modeling software to design optical systems, custom lenses, etc.
  • Optimize (non-invasively) optical coupling to and from the human body’s surface for high SNR.
  • Identify and mitigate top risks of optical integration.
  • Assess sensor performance under various physiological (e.g., skin tone) and environmental conditions.
  • Develop test systems to validate PPG design (component and system performance) and aid in the manufacturing verification test system when moving product to high volume ramp.
  • Interact with vendors to procure parts to necessary specifications and to drive specifications to meet project objectives.
  • Actively contribute to the generation of intellectual property.
  • Travel to our Cypress, CA manufacturing facility and other vendors as needed.
  • Develop reliability tests for optical portions of our products.
  • Responsible for evaluation of failure modes, conducting root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions for the company’s products.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Biomedical Engineering, EE, Optics, Physics, or related fields.
    • PhD (experience preferred)
    • Master's with 5-8 years relevant experience
  • Optical instrumentation and system design experience.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently. Problem solver.
  • Someone who enjoys working in the lab and prototyping concepts.
  • Comfortable working with minimal supervision.

Desired Skills:

  • Tissue optics
  • Solid state optical semiconductors
  • Experience with a scripting language for analyzing and plotting data (Python a plus).

Estimated Pay Range
$161,200$200,000 USD
