Niantic’s Augmented Reality (AR) Mapping team is seeking for a Software Engineer to help build and scale our AR platform pushing the frontiers of cloud computing to build, optimise and render the map of the world! 

You will work as part of a diverse team focusing on experimental innovation at the intersection of machine learning, computer vision, software engineering and augmented reality. We take pride in developing algorithms and systems from concept to large-scale production. Niantic leads the advancement of AR and other immersive technologies while creating engaging apps for a user base in the billions.

Responsibilities

  • Build key features of Niantic's AR Map to create rich experiences for our games and platforms.
  • Build and design reliable, high-throughput and scalable systems that support Niantic’s mapping technologies.
  • Write high quality code, debug solutions to complex problems that span systems, participate in code reviews, write tests to ensure uptime of live systems.
  • Optimise complexity and time of solutions to make the best use of current technologies in cloud and/or mobile.
  • Work with Niantic’s research teams to invent, evaluate and help productionise solutions to push the boundaries of what can be done today in AR.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members and stakeholders, including regular and reliable attendance and participation in meetings.
  • Required in-office 2 days on Tuesday and Thursday.

Qualifications

  • BS, MSc, or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience building reliable and scalable software.
  • Proficiency in one of the following languages: modern C++ (17, 20 preferred) and/or Python .
  • Experience designing and developing for distributed computing and large-scale systems in the cloud (e.g., GCP, Kubernetes, Argo, Ray, MapReduce, Spanner, AWS, etc.) and working knowledge of SQL and databases.
  • Knowledge of software engineering standards including automated testing, containerisation, VCS, continuous integration (CI) and MLOps.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced hybrid environment and handle stress appropriately and/or ability to solve practical problems and be sufficiently adaptable to handle dynamic situations with little advance notice.
  • Experience working on cross-functional teams with ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal communications, including asynchronous interactions with others.

Plus If…

  • Experience working with computer vision or machine learning pipelines.
  • Experience with deployment on cloud providers, such as Google Cloud, Azure or AWS.
  • Experience designing for and running deep learning training systems at scale, including multi-server and multi-GPU training, and managing deep learning hardware resources.
  • Experience developing performance and quality metrics or crafting algorithms for specialised hardware architectures (e.g., CUDA, DSP, SIMD, fixed-point arithmetics, GPGPU, etc.).

The total compensation package for this position includes a new hire offer base salary range of £70,200 - £97,000 + bonus + equity + benefits.

Individual pay within this salary range is determined by work location and additional factors, including assessed job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
