THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced, dynamic, and forward-thinking VP, Research & Discovery to join our rapidly-expanding Research, Nutrition, and Innovation department. Reporting directly to the Chief Science and Nutrition officer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our company by overseeing all aspects of our scientific research and discovery initiatives on a global scale and supporting and enabling product development and innovation. This role requires a visionary leader with a strong background in nutrition science, scientific and technical research methodologies, and team and performance management. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing research strategies, overseeing a research team, and collaborating closely with cross-functional leadership.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Develop and articulate a comprehensive vision and strategic framework for the Research and Discovery function at AG, aligning it with the overarching objectives of the RNI capability, encompassing both short-term (1-2 years) and long-term (3-5 years) goals. This includes innovative ingredients, novel products and nutrients, improved existing products and more.
  • Oversee the direction of scientific studies and clinical trials, providing strategic guidance to the team on prioritized research objectives and for the immediate and long-term future. 
  • Uphold the highest ethical standards and regulatory compliance throughout all research activities.
  • Foster an environment of innovation, collaboration, and excellence within the research and discovery team, fostering a culture that thrives on cutting-edge exploration and groundbreaking initiatives.
  • Recruit, train, and mentor scientific staff, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Marketing and Education to translate research findings as a leverage in curating consumer-facing marketing.
  • Provide scientific expertise and guidance to support product development initiatives and goals.
  • Proactively identify and implement cost-saving opportunities and operational efficiencies within research processes and methodologies (experiments, clinical trials, etc.), contributing to the organization's financial success and strategic objectives.
  • Identify and establish strategic partnerships with esteemed academic and industry institutions, fostering a collaborative ecosystem that enhances research capabilities.
  • Explore avenues for external funding, grants, and partnerships to bolster research and development initiatives, ensuring sustained progress and innovation.
  • Drive the integration of bioinformatics, AI, and big data analytics into R&D processes to extract meaningful insights.
  • Explore opportunities for leveraging advanced computational methods to enhance research methodologies.
  • Maintain a current and in-depth understanding of the latest advancements in nutrition science, integrating relevant findings into ongoing and future research projects to uphold the organization's position at the forefront of scientific innovation.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • 12+ years of experience leading scientific research and development with a proven track record of supporting and driving innovation and product development.
  • A PhD or another doctorate-level degree in a relevant field (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Food Science, etc.).
  • Significant experience in managing clinical trials, various research experiments and studies simultaneously, and applying advanced technologies to enhance overall strategy.
  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics, AI, and big data analytics, with a demonstrated ability to integrate these technologies into R&D processes.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing strategic partnerships with academic and industry institutions, ideally with existing relationships and a strong network.
  • A forward-thinking and innovative mindset, coupled with the ability to identify and capitalize on emerging market trends and technological advancements.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and guide a multidisciplinary team towards ambitious goals.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate complex scientific concepts to diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with executive leadership, cross-functional teams, and external partners to drive strategic initiatives and achieve organizational objectives.

AG1 is dedicated to providing equitable and competitive compensation & benefits packages. For this particular role, the base salary range is $216,500.00 - $256,500.00 and will ultimately be decided at the offer stage, based on an individual candidate’s level of skills and experience aligned with the needs of this role. Base salary is only one component of total compensation for this position. We provide a competitive mix of base salary, performance bonus, and stock option allocation for eligible roles.
