Climbing is looking for a full-time Associate Editor to help shape the leading voice in the climbing world. This position is key in shaping Climbing’s editorial voice and building a strong connection with our audience, from beginners to seasoned experts. This is your chance to merge your passion for the sport with your writing, editing, and digital production talents to advance the source for climbing news, gear insights, and stories.
Within 1 month, you will:
- Onboard and Integrate: Work closely with the team to understand Climbing's content strategy, workflow, and style guidelines.
- Master WordPress: Gain proficiency in our content management system, focusing on content updates and uploading straightforward stories.
- Apply SEO Fundamentals: Feel confident implementing SEO basics, including optimizing headlines, decks, and intros.
- Update Content: Begin supporting routine updates and SEO optimization of existing content.
- Begin Writing and Publishing: Write and publish 2-3 stories per week on assignment across news, SEO, culture, and gear.
- Begin Editing and Fact-Checking: Start copyediting and fact-checking articles from fellow staff members.
Within 6 months, you will:
- Pitch and Brainstorm: Contribute to editorial discussions with timely and relevant ideas for Climbing coverage.
- Write and Publish. Write and publish ~4 stories per week, including a mix of assignments and your own ideas, across news, SEO, culture, gear, and features.
- Edit and Fact-Check: Measurably edit and fact-check articles written by fellow staff members and freelancers to ensure their accuracy and quality.
- Develop Email Content: Source Weekend Whipper and compile stories and editor notes for newsletters.
- Collaborate Across Teams: Work with the social media, sales, and marketing teams to ensure content performs well across platforms and resonates with key audience segments.
- Independently Produce Content: Assigning stories to WordPress, including sourcing art, formatting, and publishing.
- Edit SEO Proficiently: Perform light- to medium-level SEO edits on existing content.
- Engage with Social Media: Monitor social trends within the sport and beyond to identify emerging topics and potential story angles.
Within 12 months, you will:
- Expand Your Writing Opportunities: Take on additional writing responsibilities, aiming for an average of 3-4 stories per week.
- Master Advanced SEO: Guide and mentor others in SEO best practices, ensuring content is optimized for search.
- Strategically Plan: Participate in editorial planning meetings, offering insights on content direction and audience engagement.
- Take Ownership of Strategic Initiatives: Develop editorial ideas that expand Climbing’s audience and address emerging trends in the climbing world.
- Contribute to New Formats: Work with the team to explore storytelling formats such as video, audio, or interactive content.
- Become an Editorial Ambassador: Represent Climbing's voice and values in written content and potentially in video/audio.
- Mentor Freelancers and Junior Contributors: Provide guidance to grow the team’s overall editorial quality.
What YOU bring to Outside: (Preferred Qualifications)
Required:
- In-depth knowledge of climbing, preferably across bouldering, sport climbing, trad climbing, and ice climbing
- Passion and talent for the craft of writing, with at least five relevant published clips
- 2+ years of relevant experience in professional writing, editing, or digital content production, or equivalent experience in a related role.
- Robust research and interview skills
- Working knowledge of SEO principles
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects and workload autonomously, as well as collaborate with team members
- Love of learning and eagerness to grow in this role
- Willingness to embody Climbing's brand, voice, and values
Preferred:
- Working knowledge of WordPress or similar CMS
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Writing, Journalism, English, or a related field.
What We Offer:
Entirely remote jobs that could be performed in Colorado: Employees can expect to be paid a salary of between $45,000 to $55,000 USD. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission . Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, Flexible Time Away, sick leave, and more. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors
