Job Description

The Director, Communications - Flag Football will lead the strategy to grow the sport’s awareness, credibility, and participation in the U.S. and internationally, supporting the broader flag ecosystem and the NFL’s leadership through NFL FLAG. This role sets the narrative for flag football—elevating access, inclusion, and pathways—while aligning internal and external partners to deliver compelling stories with measurable impact.

The Director will drive integrated media, content, and thought-leadership programs across youth, scholastic, community, and elite moments like the upcoming LA28 Olympic Games; amplify flag programs and partnerships; and integrate flag football into NFL tentpoles and flag-specific events.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and own an integrated, multi-year communications plan that advances flag football growth at all levels in the U.S. and abroad; align messages, moments, and metrics across stakeholders.
  • Lead storytelling and media strategy tied to LA28 and develop a roadmap that supports continued Olympic inclusion at Brisbane 2032.
  • Build a communications/advocacy toolkit to support National Federation of State High School Associations/state association sanctioning efforts; coordinate state-by-state announcement and amplification plans.
  • Drive press strategy across national, local, youth/scholastic, community, lifestyle, and international outlets; translate participation data and safety/skill benefits into human stories.
  • Collaborate across Football Operations, International, Marketing/Social, Player Engagement, and Legends; engage external partners (federations/governing bodies, state associations, school systems, parks & rec, community orgs).
  • Lead communications for flag-specific showcases/championships across the ecosystem and, where appropriate, integrate flag stories into NFL tentpoles (e.g., Draft, Pro Bowl Games, International Games).
  • Create message guides and assets for clubs, leagues, schools, and partners, steward consistent terminology in line with the league style guide.
  • Define KPIs and report progress.
  • Maintain talking points, holding statements, and Q&As for flag-related issues in scholastic and community environments.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Communications or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years in communications/PR (sports, youth/scholastic, community, or brand preferred).
  • Proven success building growth-focused comms strategies with measurable outcomes.
  • Strong media relationships and excellence in narrative development and spokesperson preparation.
  • Experience running on-site media ops at major events and managing cross-functional teams/agencies.
  • Data storytelling skills; ability to turn insights into simple, human stories.
  • Sound judgment and comfort in fast-paced, high-visibility environments.

  • Passion for youth sports participation, access, and inclusion; familiarity with scholastic/community programming.
  • Global mindset and experience supporting international storytelling.

Travel:

  • On-site presence as needed at NFL tentpole events, FLAG specific events and activations throughout the season.

Terms /Expected Hours of Work:

  • NFL employees are required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week onsite, five days per week in our League office in NYC.

Salary / Pay Range

The NFL expects to hire for this position near the middle of the range. Only in truly rare and exceptional circumstances, where an external candidate has experience, credentials, or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position, would the NFL consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range.

Salary
$155,000$185,000 USD

This role requires onsite presence at an NFL office or stadium location, and remote and/or hybrid working options are not offered.
