Job Description

INTRODUCTION:

We are seeking an innovative leader to join our team as a Director of Software Engineering overseeing our mobile app development. This is an opportunity to work with and evolve our technical platforms that deliver our clients’ gym member interactions on mobile, including scheduling classes, making payments, and managing their subscriptions.  ABC provides a custom branded application experience available in both the Google Play and Apple App Store.

You will be the leader over multiple teams building features on these applications, driving technical direction, and architectural guidance over mobile technologies.  This includes backend API services and design, as well as all The App functionality. WHAT YOU’LL DO:

• Manage all development teams’ activities. Work with and coach software engineers, quality engineers and processes, set and direct architecture, and work with Platform Operations to deliver and support high quality software products.
• Collaborate with the product owners, designers, customers, and other company executives to contribute to and evangelize product and technical roadmap initiatives.
• Collaborate with architecture, senior developers, and other leaders to provide technical feasibility, specifications and estimates for project ideas.
• Incorporate performance, data security, and integrity into your teams’ outputs to generate a top-quality experience for our customers.
• Identify and drive your teams’ technology direction and vision. Be connected to the pulse of the industry and keep our mobile strategy aligned with the changing currents of mobile and wearable technology.
• Identify, communicate, and enforce development processes and best practices including coding standards, testing, reviews, and releases.
• Lead recruiting efforts for team members, which could include engineers, testers, or other individuals necessary for successful delivery of the organization’s goals.
• Maintain and execute an employee development framework, 1-on-1 meetings for direct reports, coach, and mentor team members. Provide clear guidance and feedback to team members regarding performance, career management, and development.
• Bring a positive, collaborative, and innovative mindset to the team.
• Participate in leadership activities including reporting to the senior leadership group regarding the status and progress of your teams’ current projects. Providing suggestions and feedback in setting the organizational direction.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

• A BS or MS in Computer Science, or equivalent industry experience.
• 7+ years of experience managing teams.
• Strong skills using object-oriented languages such as .NET, C#, and Java.
• Strong skills in Javascript frameworks such as React Native, React.js, RxJS, Typescript, or similar technologies.
• Experience with cloud Saas offerings such as AWS or Azure.
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins.
• Experience integrating with enterprise software and working in a complex and dynamic team environment.
• Experience overseeing and directing the development and use of test automation for the application of best practices to deliver working software.
• Engineering management experience with a strong record of delivery using Agile processes.
• Demonstrated success building scalable web products including web frontend, backend Services, APIs, and applications for mobile or wearable devices.
• Experience managing hybrid teams including Full Time Employees and contract staff based in a geographically disbursed environment. ABC is a remote first company so team members may be all over the world.
• An ability to troubleshoot issues across all layers of the stack, including presentation layer, service layer, and data layer.
• Experience working with relational databases such as Oracle, Postgres, or MySQL.
• The ability to take ownership over complex issues and tasks and work independently to solve them.
• An ability to create a fun, engaged working environment for the team.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, and comfort presenting to everyone from entry-level employees to senior vice presidents to customer leadership teams.
• An ability to explain complicated or technical information in a simple way to non-technical audiences.
• A sensitivity to clients' needs and able to develop warm client relationships.
• An eagerness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
• Must be detail-oriented and able to make sound decisions.
• Must be able to recognize mistakes, admit failure, and adjust course when necessary.
• Experience in or strong interest in working with products related to the fitness industry.
• Experience with PCI, SOC, and ISO audits and certifications.

Please note that the salary information shown below is a general guideline only and based on employees in the United States and may be different in other countries. Salaries are based upon candidate experience, qualifications, and location, as well as market and business considerations. Our pay range for U.S. based candidates for this position is $150,000 -- $205,000 USD annually. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for the job location during the hiring process. Also, certain positions are eligible for additional forms of compensation such as bonuses and commissions. 

 Please note that the salary information shown below is a general guideline only and based on employees in Canada and may be different in other countries. Salaries are based upon candidate experience, qualifications, and location, as well as market and business considerations. Our pay range for Canada based candidates for this position is $140,500 -- $186,000 CAD annually. Also, certain positions are eligible for additional forms of compensation such as bonuses and commissions.
