Free Range Games grows games the old fashioned way: we don’t put our team in cages, we work distributedly, and we don’t use toxic work/life trade-offs. Some of our crafters have worked together from PS1 to PS5 and will tell you about carving games one triangle at a time from punch cards.

We are some of the folk behind Spider-man, Tony Hawk, Lord of the Rings, Twitch Sings, Oddworld, Callisto Protocol, Shrek Super Slam, and dozens of mobile and web games. We believe every member of the team has a voice in what the game should be.

We prioritize community, family, and love-of-gaming over process, crunching, and TPS reports. And maybe that’s what you want too.

As a Senior Technical Game Designer at Free Range Games, you will be a pivotal member of our team, contributing to the development of exciting and innovative features and quests. Acting as a solution finder and liaison between designers and other disciplines, you will shape the architecture of new game systems and implement complex technical design elements into our projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of the realization and implementation of the technical elements for complete game features, collaborating closely with designers, programmers, and other professionals.
  • Produce prototypes to adjust and validate features and systems before production, assessing their success through measurable objectives.
  • Proactively identify and resolve major design roadblocks, improving team workflow and productivity.
  • Develop technical guidelines for blueprinting, folder structure, system structure, data management and more..
  • Act as a technical reference, supporting and advising peers, while actively participating in advanced debugging throughout production.
  • Stay up to date on industry best practices, continually developing skills and refreshing knowledge.
  • Monitor and evaluate game progression systems, activities, spawner systems, actor manager systems, and tools for our developers.
  • Perform feasibility tests, optimizations, and validate performance with the assistance of the engineering team to keep the game running smoothly during development.
  • Regularly evaluate tools and pipelines, identifying improvements to enhance production efficiency.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 4-5 years of professional experience as a Technical Designer, preferably on AAA console titles.
  • Exceptional knowledge of Unreal Engine technology and capabilities.
  • Mastery of Unreal Engine’s Blueprints.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to articulate ideas in technical language.
  • Critical thinking, curiosity, resourcefulness, and flexibility.
  • Relevant working experience in data handling.
  • Ability to analyze data and draw meaningful conclusions.

Pluses:

  • Scripting or programming experience, particularly in C++.
  • Experience with 2D/3D software packages.
  • Shipped games in Unreal Engine 5.
