Job Description

Location: Charlotte, NC 

We’re looking for an outstanding General Counsel to lead all legal functions for Fastbreak AI and to steer the company’s compliance with privacy laws, data security frameworks, and regulatory obligations spanning our pro sports, amateur sports, and fan activation divisions. The ideal candidate will have experience working on both sides of the table at a top law firm as well as a corporate counsel inside a software company.

Fastbreak is a rapidly growing leader in sports operations technology. Our products power professional leagues like the NBA, MLS, and NHL as well as some of the largest youth and amateur sports organizations around the world.

Reporting to the CEO, you will serve as the senior legal advisor to the executive team and oversee legal needs across all divisions. You bring deep expertise privacy, data security and legal compliance for our background check services. You know how to manage multiple competing priorities and thrive working in a fast-paced environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Own all aspects of data privacy for our diverse user groups and oversee all of our data security programs and compliance with data protection standards and laws.
  • Oversee legal, regulatory requirements for Fastbreak’s compliance and background screening products. Provide legal guidance on identity verification, age verification, background screening, Safe Sport requirements, and state-specific youth safety regulations.
  • You’ll build policies, controls, training, and audits that meet GDPR, UK GDPR, CPRA, and other applicable laws.
  • Partner with Security and Engineering on security posture and certifications. Align legal terms with SOC 2, ISO 27001, and incident response plans. 
  • Advise on data governance and product counseling. Guide teams on data collection, AI features, product telemetry, consent, international data transfers, children’s data and COPPA considerations for youth sports audiences.
  • Manage risk, compliance, and corporate matters. Oversee governance, cap table and equity documents, board materials, and related policies. Support employment law questions and investigations with HR.
  • Lead commercial contracting for enterprise software contracts. Draft, review, and negotiate MSAs, TOUs‌ and SOWs, partner and reseller agreements and supplier contracts.
  • Oversee contracts and legal obligations with outside counsel for acquisitions, including diligence, LOIs/term sheets, purchase agreements, transition services agreements, and integration risk assessments.
  • Manage trademarks with outside counsel, including searches and filings.
  • Oversee personal privacy issues and DMCA, including data subject requests, complaints.
  • Manage outside counsel on larger projects, ensuring desired outcomes while controlling costs.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of legal experience with significant time in privacy, compliance, and data security for software and/or SaaS.
  • Expert negotiator for software companies with a strong track record on MSAs, data transfer terms and complex partnerships.
  • Hands-on experience operationalizing GDPR, UK GDPR, CPRA and related privacy requirements and aligning them with SOC 2 and ISO 27001 programs.
  • Product counseling experience for data-driven and AI-enabled software, including consent, transparency, retention, and acceptable use.
  • Strong judgment, practical risk balancing, and clear written and verbal communication to executives, customers, and partners.
  • Licensed to practice law in the United States and in good standing. JD from an accredited law school.
  • Tech startup and/or fast-growth company experience required. 
  • Must be agile, able to juggle multiple projects, and take a proactive approach to identifying risk.
