The key function of the Principal Mission Designer role is to design and deliver the structure of mission-based content that drives player engagement on MCOC. They will own the design of our Story Quest replacement end-to-end — from concept and alignment through implementation, testing, and tuning — and will partner with Encounter Designers, Narrative, and Production to bring it to life. As a senior contributor, they are expected to operate with a high degree of independence, deliver the first piece of content in the new format, and codify the methodology so the team retains this specialized knowledge.
This role is a full-time, on-site position based 5 days a week at our Downtown Vancouver studio.
This role is a Temporary Full-Time position with a current approximate end date of November 15, 2026.
In this role, you can expect to:Key Accountabilities
Design and deliver the Story Quest replacement:
Own the design documentation for our Story Quest replacement, including objectives, pacing, mission flow, progression, and narrative integration.
Drive alignment with stakeholders across Design, Production, and Narrative on the format, scope, and player experience goals of the new content.
Deliver the first piece of content in the new format, including mission structure, implementation, testing, and tuning.
Partner with Encounter Designers to translate mission intent into combat encounters that serve the broader mission arc; remain capable of working independently on encounter design where needed.
Establish the production process for the new content format:
Define and document the end-to-end production process for the Story Quest replacement, including handoffs between Mission, Encounter, Narrative, and Production disciplines.
Identify tooling, templates, and review checkpoints required to scale the format efficiently in future cycles.
Pilot the process through the first piece of content and iterate based on what is learned during delivery.
Codify and transfer mission design knowledge
Produce a written methodology for designing missions in this format, capturing principles, anti-patterns, decision frameworks, and worked examples.
Mentor the remaining Mission and Encounter design capacity on the team through pairing, design reviews, and documentation over the course of the contract.
Leave the team in a position to design and produce subsequent content in the format without dependency on the contractor.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to bring content to life:
Partner with other disciplines to translate mission concepts into shipped content.
Communicate design intent clearly through written documents, diagrams, and presentations to both peers and leadership.
View content holistically — how a single mission fits within the broader player journey and live-game cadence of MCOC.
Collaborate with the Narrative and World Design teams to maintain consistency across content.
Collaborate with the Economy and Balance teams to fine-tune rewards and mission objectives.
Iterate, balance, and tune based on data and feedback:
Drive iterative adjustments based on internal feedback, playtests, and (where available) player data.
Partner with Data Science and Production to define success metrics for the new format and use them to inform design decisions.
Maintain a prioritized backlog of follow-up improvements and emergent work items that can be pulled in as capacity allows.
To be successful in this role, your background includes:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, with an emphasis on game design, narrative design, or a related field.
7+ years of game design experience on FTP properties, with a substantial portion focused on quest, mission, level, or campaign-structure design.
Demonstrated ownership of shipped mission-based or quest-based content in a live or large-scale game.
Strong ability to design the structure of player-facing content independently of the specific combat encounters within it.
Proven ability to coordinate with Encounter Designers, Narrative, and Production while remaining capable of independent encounter work when required.
Considerable experience with Marvel Contest of Champions' economy, gameplay, and social features is a must (aka, play the game!). Prior Kabam experience on MCOC is a significant asset given the contract length and the need to minimize onboarding.
Familiarity with RPG, BCG, and action genres on mobile, PC, console, and pen-and-paper platforms.
Track record of establishing or improving content production processes on a team.
Excellent communication skills, including documentation and presentation; able to produce methodology that others can follow.
Rock-solid organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities.
Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and related spreadsheet software.
A strong desire to make the best games in the world alongside others that share your motivation.
