POSITION OVERVIEW
The Supervisor, Umpire Development will be primarily responsible for observation, training, and overall development of umpires working at the MiLB/PDL level. Through both in-person and virtual observations this role is designed to provide consistent feedback to umpires to aid in the refinement of their technical skill sets and situational awareness as they they attempt to advance to higher levels of Baseball. The position works under the supervision of the Senior Manager, Umpire Development. Candidate is expected to have a working knowledge of the Umpire Manuals and Collective Bargaining Agreement with the AMLU.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Instruct at MLB Umpire Camps and other MLB Umpire training courses and events.
• Supervise umpires working games during MiLB/PDL Spring Training, championship season, AFL, Fall Instructional.
• Develop and maintain working relationships with MLB/MiLB Club Staff and MiLB Regional Supervisors on umpiring-related issues.
• Provide written evaluation reports on each observation of an umpires’ work.
• Meet periodically with umpires, either in-person or virtually, to review their work and provide specific feedback.
• Assist in the Mid-Year and Year-End evaluation processes for MiLB/PDL umpires.
• Aid in Umpiring Department recruiting and development initiatives.
• Assist MLB Umpire Operations and Umpire Development with special projects and responsibilities as indicated.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
• High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
• Minimum of five (5) years of professional umpiring experience required.
• Proficient knowledge and command of the Official Baseball Rules and Umpire Manuals.
• Travel for work assignments on regular basis is required.
• Professional demeanor, organized and detail oriented
• Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
• Extensive multi-tasking skills and experience managing deliverables with time-sensitive deadline
• Availability on nights and weekends, particularly during the season
